EN99 Today on Radio 4
01/01/12 13:37

This one came out of an experience of heartburn I had while I listened to John Humphrys tearing strips off of some politician. There appears to be less interest in giving people a chance to talk and explain themselves than a rather ugly marking of one’s territory.
By contrast to that, the advice that Paul provides in 2Timothy - concerning how to engage with non-Christian perspectives - is refreshing and altogether positive.
20 Curries / 10 Days
27/02/11 13:31

From the leader's blog:
"The chance to spend time with Indian brothers and sisters, learn about their culture and their work, do some teaching, and eat twenty curries in ten days, was an extraordinary opportunity."

EN58 unRepentant

There was a lot of prep work for this one in the sketchbook. I am including a few of the later drafts below to give a sense of some of the last changes. Initially I was inspired by something that Jensen said about the whole GAFCON/Robinson controversy recently. It got me thinking about what the Christian message requires of people and whether you can mess around with repentance or not.
Anyways - eventually my imagination conjured up this car dealer showroom and someone buying a vehicle where the reverse gear had been removed because it was condescending to suggest someone had taken a wrong direction... eventually I got to the current version which is much tighter and applies across the board.
I also really like the styling of the current piece. The gearbox imagery came to me at about 5.30am one morning and I love the combination of speech bubbles and symbols.
My lovely wife was right to point out that it excludes any non-drivers (and any non-manual/stick drivers!). Oh well.

EN36 Stockholm Syndrome/Happy Hostage

The Bible epilogue text can be found here (you may have to scroll down a bit to find the exact part...).
Probably one of the most chilling stories ever had come to light. I mused on the idea of 'Stockholm Syndrome' (a condition that I had heard of before) and thought that this is exactly what happens when people are faced with the amazing truth of Christ's rescue plan. The attachment to the slavery of this world really gets in the way of someone openly coming to faith in Christ, and it takes an amazing work of God's grace to bring them beyond themselves.
This is probably my favourite strip of the EN series. The title text is fundamentally part of the composition and the panels develop in a way that I personally get a buzz out of.
The dedication is for the three new workers in our church. I wanted to say 'thankyou' for their immense hard work and brilliant contribution to the family. I had better stop now before this gets into an Oscar speech.
