The Plant: Joy, Really?

"Last weekend, m’colleague Phil Keymer preached on Isaiah 9, which says of God:
You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
(Isaiah 9:3, English Standard Version)
Phil said that Jesus fulfills this text, and the surrounding passage, along these lines: Jesus has changed contempt to glory, and anguish to joy, for his followers.
Well, OK. But was he right?
