Principles/observations/practices

1. Only following people you have a meaningful connection with. Usually this means people who I have spent time with in person/have worked with/had proper interaction.

2. Use lists. This feature on Twitter is decent! I am a firm believer in the idea of having fewer 'follows' and lots of lists that are appropriate to the kind of relationship connection you might have. If they don't know you then stick them on a list. If you don't know them (or feel a little weird about being cosy) stick them on a list.
Here are my current categories:
  • Following
  • Brains Worth Listening To
  • Humans I Know Of
  • Local
  • Organisms
  • Contrary or Distanto
All of the lists are private.¹

This means that even though I only follow 30ish people, there are a ton of others who I am listening to. Lists feel appropriate. I hate the idea of being in close digital proximity with all those different kinds of people. There are some people or organisations that I really want to stay in touch with but to be honest it just weirds me out to have their tweeting junking up the feed.

¹Ha! Having gone to all these lengths I recently took a tweeting fast for just over a month and found myself utterly appalled by the ‘noise’ on the return. I promptly ditched my lists and began some new ones. Hence: my newer thinking is to flush your lists fairly regularly. If they are worth listening to they should survive the odd cull.
